Following you from KS but am married to a Swede, grew up in central WI, went to the U of M, so I especially enjoy your blog because of those connections. (I've even been to the Zorn museum in Mora!) About living vicariously: I don't really have any desire to do a big year (at least not an ABA one), but love reading about them. Thanks for giving us all the chance to come along for the ride. Good luck!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02991198732579117146noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7759991183598568178.post-68820718904148424872016-06-24T06:35:28.483-05:002016-06-24T06:35:28.483-05:00Okay guys I think we all have to go back to school...Okay guys I think we all have to go back to school on sparrows. I just got email from eBird reviewer and I think he is on minn ou committee or was. Says "thanks for great pictures diagnostic". Then goes on to ask if can use my photos and Tony's for minn ou as ours are best and they already have sound recordings but no good pictures. My checklist got confirmed. Th...I agree with Alex, Dan Small, and Paul Chapman. The first individual is no doubt a Grasshopper Sparrow because of the plain face. I was originally leaning towards Baird's on the second bird, but now am convinced that it is a particularly olive-faced Savannah. The streaking on the breast is too extensive for any Ammodramus species, and it lacks the separated spots on the edge of the auriculars that a Baird's would have. Do you have any photos of the other birds that all appeared to be Baird's'? If they all turn out to be Savannahs, I suggest North Dakota or Montana, where they breed regularly. I know that I have no idea so I simply quote verbatim- "this looks more like a Savannah to me. Look for example at the black sub-moustachial stripe. In Baird's this should be narrower and be separated from the other black spots on the rear of the ear coverts. In Savannah Sparrow this runs around the lower edge of the ear coverts to link to a blackish blob, as in this bird. Also note the Song Sparrow like central breast blob (merged streaks), not seen in Baird's but frequent in Savannah." You may have other photos? But I wanted to ensure you had a chance to check and correct any issues that anyone may put forward after 31st December! Good luck and twitch hard. All the best.
